PSM's History
Pet Smile Month 2007
Petsmile Month 2007 was a resounding success, more practices than ever took part, and well over 15,000 pets received complimentary Petsmile dental check-ups.
Once again we give thanks to Royal Canin, Pedigree Dentastix and Petplan for providing essential support to the campaign. Radio and newspaper advertising helped to raise nationwide awareness, and this year saw the launch of the Petsmile Club, a new online resource offering owners a useful healthcare reminder service, diary and photo gallery for their pets.
Pet Smile Month 2006
The 2006 campaign was supported by Royal Canin and Pedigree Dentastix together with Petplan. Their help was invaluable in the promotion of better dental health for our pets. For the first time ever, Pet Smile Month had the backing of a major TV advertising campaign that really helped the scheme connect with owners and explain why proper dental care for our pets is so important to their wellbeing.
Pet Smile Month 2004
Nestle Purina supported Pet Smile Month again in 2004. We broke new records for the numbers of practices and the numbers of pets checked.
Pet Smile Month 2003
Nestle Purina supported Pet Smile Month in 2003. Nearly 1400 veterinary practices took part – making this the largest veterinary led pet health promotion campaign ever. Hundreds of thousands of Pet Smile Checks were carried out throughout the UK.
Pet Smile Month 2002
The campaign in 2002 broke new barriers in raising the publics awareness of their pets oral health. Pet Smile Month 2002 also saw a change in the campaign logo, to give equal emphasis to dogs as well as cats and their big, sparkly white smiles! Promotional materials in Veterinary practices, supermarkets and pet stores led to over 172 Tonnes of oral health products being distributed by participants nationwide.
Pet Smile Month 2001
In 2001 we had a short break, partly due to the training that Bob tried to put in for the London Marathon.
Pet Smile Month 2000
Even more vets registered for Pet Smile Month in 2000. We were delighted when celebrity vet Trude Mostue agreed to help us launch Pet Smile Month along with Gnasher from Sky Kids TV and the Beano. As well as gaining massive publicity Pet Smile Month also featured on the front page of the Beano and the whole of Dennis the Menace's cartoon script was dedicated to keeping Gnasher's gnashers looking good!
Pet Smile Month 1999
Pet Smile Month - February 1999 was the largest ever Veterinary Health Promotion held in the UK. 850 Veterinary Practices registered as PSM Veterinary Practices and undertook to provide complimentary "Pet Smile Check-Ups". This represents approximately 50% of the UK's Small Animal Practices - each committed to trying to treat and prevent oral disease. Over 10,000 Pet Smile Survey forms were returned - this represented only a small % of the total numbers of animals checked. With the official press launch attended by Roy Hattersley and Buster his dog and co-author, we managed to generate over 350 separate items of press and media coverage - varying from GMTV and Breakfast TV coverage to the Vanessa Show, Radio 4's "You and Yours" to countless local radio appearances. Most importantly many of the subsequent press items were locally inspired - local practices contacting their own local press about their local initiatives.
Pet Dental Awareness Month 1998
This was launched by St Jon VRx. Some national and regional press and media interest. 1998 Pet Dental Health Month launched by OakBeck Veterinary Hospital. An art competition resulted in the drawing which was adapted for use in the original Pet Smile Month Campaign.
